Student Green Challenge

Our Student Challenge program is an effort to directly cater to students who are interested in climate action. We strive to provide fun ways for the youth to get involved to try and relieve some of that climate anxiety in wake of the environment they are inheriting. By the Fall of 2024, 141 high school and middle school students were participants in our student challenge. This has made a significant impact in less than a year, saving a total of 278 tons of CO2e, 239,892 gallons of water, and $71,520! Following the conclusion of these challenges, students have the opportunity to win up to $100, as well as recognition at City Hall.

How does it work?

Cool Irvine invites all Irvine middle and high school students to join the Green Challenge and take action for the planet. Using our platform, challenge.coolirvine.org; participants can complete youth-friendly activities that reduce their carbon footprint while the website tracks their environmental impact. To enter the contest, students must submit a permission form, register on our platform, and create a presentation featuring images, descriptions of their completed actions, and reflections on how the challenge shaped their understanding of sustainability. Participants can compete individually for a $70 gift card or as part of a team of 3–5 members for $100 gift cards per team member. All winners will be recognized at an Irvine City Council meeting.
